Hi there! My name is Nina Alvarez and I am a sophomore at the University of Maryland majoring in Communication with a focus in Social Influence and a double minor in Rhetoric and Philosophy. I am a part of the College Park Scholars - Media, Self and Society program, a peer mentor for current freshmen who are in the program, and an ambassador for the College of Arts and Humanities.
For the College Park Scholars - Media, Self and Society program, I am an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant and I have an internship as the Social Media Engagement Coordinator for our program - this is also my practicum! My tasks included designing posts, such as guest speaker announcements, event promotions, and student spotlights, increasing audience engagement, and establishing the program's brand. In this role, I connected with other students for interviews, established and collaborated with a team of current freshman in the program, and worked alongside Program Director Alison Burns and Program Coordinator Kelly Brower to learn about program news and upcoming events. Through my studies, I have been able to explore the ideas and theories that revolve around communication, as well as the ways and process we go through to communicate with one another. I’ve also been able to explore the ways in which we are influenced and how that correlates with our personal ideals and values. All of these teachings connect with the way we interact with the media and the role it plays in our day to day lives, which I have learned through the College Park Scholars - Media, Self and Society program. I hope to connect my studies within the University with my prior knowledge and certification in Graphic Design to further enhance my skills in all aspects and increase my knowledge about the field.
